Met up with friend's friend, a grad student from China recently.
When I opened my mouth in that "you-know-which-school" accent and
spoke Mandarin, he thought I hailed from Indonesia.
Oh and he almost jumped out of his chair when another friend
started speaking mandarin to him after 2 hours of using English.
I guess when dinner was
over, he was wondering about Singaporean Chinese who can speak
Hokkien better than Putonghua, absolutely love chili and can
interchange between English and Mandarin with ease. At least he did
try to speak to us in English after he realised our Mandarin wasn't
to scratch, or in his words, different in enunciation.
