Man who injected grandmother with mercury sentenced to 30
months' jail
SINGAPORE: A man who injected his grandmother with mercury while
she slept has been sentenced to 30 months' jail.
The court had heard that 27-year-old Er Choon Sian tried to poison
his grandmother, 75-year-old Wang Siok Tiang, early last
year.
She later suffered hallucinations, fever, delirium and
swelling.
Madam Wang was admitted to hospital where the mercury had to be
surgically removed from her body.
Er also used her ATM card and stole thousands of dollars from her
bank account.
District Judge Siva Shanmugam said that despite Er's schizophrenia,
the acts were premeditated and executed over a period of
time.
In passing sentence, he took into account several aggravating
factors of the case.
He noted that Er was found to be aware of what he was doing and
knew that what he had done was wrong at the time of the
offences.
Er will be placed in the psychiatric rehabilitation unit at the
Changi Prison and will be sent to the Institute of Mental Health
for further treatment after his prison term expires.
Er's sentence has been backdated to July 17, 2006. CNA/so
