Ai ai ai. Whoever said that the average age is 52? As you can see from the chart on the site, the average age is already spelt out for you - it was 27 in 1976 and 36 in 2001. Why would you want to go trying to calculate average age when it's already been listed there? Laughing

Okay, if I have to spoonfeed you as usual:
- in 1976, 0.71% of the total group of Singaporean immigrants to Australia was aged over 50
- in 2001, 17.20% of the total group of Singaporean immigrants to Australia was aged over 50

To put it another way, a Singaporean moving to Australia became 24 times more likely to be aged over 50 over that period. If you want to hang on to ideas that are 30 years out of date, feel free - the rest of us are living in the present where more people of our parents' age can afford and are willing to move from Singapore to Australia.

In 2001, the total Singapore immigrant population is 7473, which includes the same pool from 1976, which is suppose to be above the average age 50 years.

If you divide 1611/7473 = 21.5% :mrgreen Smile

In order for the pecentage of over 50 years to be 17.2%, you will need to have a much bigger proportion of young immigrant isnt it? Mr. Green

If you are not convince, let me show you another example.

Look through the age breakdown between 1991 to 2001.

1991 (40-44yrs) : approx. 580 person
1996 (45-49yrs) : approx. 580 person
2001 (50-54yrs) : approx. 580 person

If you are saying that there are many immigrant over the age 50 going to Australia, then where isnt there a surge in the no. of Singapore immigrant above the age of 50?

Following that cohort from 1976, it's:

1976 - 253
1981 - 363
1986 - 458
1991 - 574
1996 - 546
2001 - 588

As you can see, the numbers actually went down in 1996 - are you sure that they're the same people staying there over time?

If you're saying that it's more the younger Singaporeans who are moving in, why is the mean age going up? At the very least, if the same proportions moved over the years (with a total larger number), the mean would remain the same, but it's going up.

Even if you want to assume that the same people were staying, let's take the number of 50-55's of one year and subtract the number of 45-50's from five years before (of course, they would be 50-55's during the next measurement wouldn't they?). That way, we get the number of new 50-55's entering.

1976 - 1 (34-33)
1981 - -3 (70-73)
1986 - 13 (103-90)
1991 - 35 (213-17 Cool
1996 - -23 (251-274)
2001 - 42 (588-546)

There are 4.64 times as many Singaporeans in 2001 compared to 1976. If you're saying that older Singaporeans are no more likely to move over the 2001 figure should have been 5, not 42.

If no new Singaporeans arrived and none left, of course the mean age would go up, but as usual you stop halfway. It's obvious that more people have arrived, since the total number has gone up from 1611 to 7473, so that theory's out of the picture, despite what your geography teacher told you.

If older people were no more likely to move in 2001 than in 1976, the mean would stay the same. If older people were less likely to move over that same period , the mean age would drop.

If older people were more likely to move, the mean age would go up.

Yeah, this is secondary school stuff all right, but it's not geography - it's simple averages.

You're basing your conclusions on the assumption that the people who are there arrived before, and the numbers show that this is not the case. From talking with my Singaporeans friends and my relatives in Australia ,all I know is that when someone who is OPENLY sour about singaporeans planning or actually migrating to anywhere or Australia - they either failed to make it overseas and have to return blaming the country instead of themselves , OR the country don't want them . So Gazelle , which one is your reason?

Usually Singaporeans who love Singapore will just ask why and wish you the best and you wish them the best and both go on our own happy way keeping in contact ....and none of them behave like you gaz Wink .

Why is there a drop if the same people stayed there from the previous measured period as you assume they did?

Despite that drop, you can see from the mean age chart that the mean age kept rising, so much so that it went up 9 years from 1976 to 2001. If there wasn;t an increase in older people coming over, how do explain the number going up? Don't give me that story about the 1976 cohort getting older over that time - you know as well as I do that even with your false assumption about them all being there over that period, they still only consituted around 20% of the total 2001 cohort, and that's nowhere near enough to create that 9-year swing.

And as for what you can tell me, well, that's your opinion and I, like most people here, will choose to disregard your opinions.

a) I got a sibling who is an australian citizen and is married to a white australian girl. under the sponsorship program I can do it anytime

b) I am a part owner of a property in Sunshine coast that I share with my bros, so technically speaking, I already have a roof above my head in australia.

c) I have load of business contacts in australia and I can easily get a job or set up my own business if i wish to.

Contrary to what you are saying, I would never want to relocated my parents for selfish reasons.

I am born in Singapore and I like the convenient of eating out, hangout out with all my friends and living close to my parents and relatives, plus there are actually so much more opportunities to make your first million dollar in Singapore than in isolated Australia.

I wonder why so many australians are trying to get out and singaporeans are trying to get it...interesting isnt it?
