Every act of kindness is balanced by ten deeds of selfishness,
greed, and self-interest.
Amongst the disabled are those who fend for themselves, seeking
independence despite their adversity. Unfortunately, my personal
encounters have been with those who think their disabilities
automatically qualify them for handouts.
In every public disaster where there are people disregarding their
own safety out of concern for others, there are thousands who will
stampede over a pregnant lady in the blind rush for safety.
And for each individual who gives up his seat for the elderly,
there are twenty who pretend to be asleep or blithely ignore
them.
Give people the world, a country with low crime, excellent
affordable government subsidised housing, a top rate education
system, one of the world's most efficient and clean public
transport infrastructure, and a vibrant (albeit weaker economy),
and they'll still complain about how they can't take as many
vacations, eat out as often, or purchase a flashy car.
Dissatisfaction is the great motivator. Dissatisfaction with
present circumstances create ambition, drive, focus. Of course,
some weaker individuals just give up, but then, there will always
be the failures and never-do-wells.
You can choose to look at the glass half full or half empty. Just
don't ignore the fact that there is an alternative perspective to
everything.
