I'm a pack rat too. 
Blame it on my mother. She would collect empty containers from KFC
and the like. For what I don't know. Piles and piles of these
containers in the house when I was growing up.
Yah, be merciless, toss, toss, toss. I'm doing it right now. Been
wanting to have a yard sale but the thought of having to deal with
bargain hunters who want everything and anything for 5 cents or
free, just irritates me. So I've been donating stuff to several
causes and getting a tax write off in the process.
Exciting time for you. I kinda enjoy the physical aspects of
moving, strange as that may sound.
