TehJarVu SG We go by RP (Received Pronunciation ie. Queen's English so to speak) in Singapore, but of course we fail mee rebus ly (miserably). Pronunciation can always be checked in the dictionary. Prer-vai-ded you know phonetics. I have been using Longman which is recommended by NUS English Dept.
I_am_PeTe_Parker SG I don't know about you but I rather not have the dear old cleaning lady clear my lust. She may not withstand the exertion.
Rhonda SG Nope... c'est en francais... pronounced 'Lay Mee-zay-habl' but the 'bl' is very subtle. So subtle you don't really hear it. Same as 'la table' is pronounced 'lah tah-bl' in French. The 'bl' is there... but not emphasised so it's easy to miss it. I really miss those French lessons... sooo tempted to return to Alliance Francais, especially since recently, I had to attempt to speak to a French patient's mother in my very rusty and bad French. Pretty funny! Can double-check with Neuros when she's back.
Rhonda SG Check the dictionary for phonetics. I like the Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary... it shows the phonetics for BOTH the British and the American pronunciation.
SydneyLibrarian SG That's right - just checked with my colleague who'd lived in France for a long time!
SeAvOyAgEr SG Oh, how about this two words that I am always unsure abt the pronunciation: 1) Colonel (pronounced as ker-ner?) 2) colony (pronounced as ker-ler-nie?) Why the difference?
Rhonda SG Colonel should be pronounced as 'kernel', right? But colony would be 'co-leh-knee'. It's kinda like photograph ('pho-toe-graph') but photographer ('fer-tor-gre-fer') and economy ('ee-co-ne-mee') but economic ('air-ke-noh-mic').
