Singapore cracks down on anime piracy

Tis strange to clamp down so hard on the downloaders when the source of most unofficial fansubs are derived from capture of free-to-air broadcasts. It's a...

Gordonator SG

Mr Sing now scare liao. Laughing

LazerLordz SG

From what he did, it was quite unprofessional of him to talk about his issues at work when his company tried to issue a gag order on the downloaders.

MooKu SG

I haven't really been reading this thread.. I thought it was just laa-laa-laa only when I heard some people were going to stop downloading, but seems like really lots of people have stopped downloading hah?

We can't download the licensed ones only is it?

tortoise55 SG

Its a good chance for him to do his PR now, to show the whole Singapore that he is being threatened for doing the right thing, that is catching all the downloaders.

Purplehaze623 SG

he’s on newpaper headlines today thanks to the threats from forumers to him.

LazerLordz SG

I doubt Singaporeans would be kind to him if the rest of the story was told.

Time to send a release to the LA Times.Believe me, there are a lot international eyes on this case, because it pertains to ISPs folding in ..

ndmmxiaomayi SG

Use the damn laws here. According to ISPs T&C, they will supply on court orders. That means, get to the courts, file a suit, convince them and get a court order.

This could even be extended to raid PCs. With extra court orders.

If my lessons on computer laws doesn't fail me... that is. ODEX certainly bypass lots of things here, and you could thank our laws for that.

Xephone_xenon SG

Okay, the entire agony here is that.

1) Idiots in HWZ refuse to see downloading anime as a wrong thing. And feels that odex is wrong in this case.

2) Bunch of retardeds in HWZ are screaming and shouting that Odex keeps the 3.5~5k money they pay them. And they are doing this just for the sake of money. Some idiot is even relating this to the NKF Saga.

3) Anime fans feels that its correct to insult and ridicule stephen sing through baseless assumptions. But when stephen sing made a casual comment about he enjoyed sueing people. He is SOOOO WRONG.

WTF? I agree that the xysing post was totally uncalled for and in a way its bloody arrogant. And extremely un professional.
And their lousy quality mayb one of the reason that lead us not wanting to buy their dvd/vcd titles.
And issuing charges against teenagers and even primary school kids may be a pretty drastic measure to solve matters like this.
But the biggest joke here is that, everybody is pushing the blame to odex.
No one would post something like "Hey i dled the anime, and what i did was illegal, its partly my fault in this way"
NO ONE!!

Thats the singaporean mentality.
I do something wrong, you no give me chance.
You is wrong, i is correct.
I insult and talk cock about you its correct.
But when you insult and talk cock about me its wrong.

GG everybody.
If you seriously think those bunch of retards in HWZ is doing the right thing.
Go ahead follow and believe them.
( Not saying those that makes logical post )

seow SG

But still, it wouldbe damned nice to see the whole of singapore doing what the people at hwz are doing, whole nation threaten him. Laughing

Xephone_xenon SG

No, i see it as idiots blindly bandwagoning.

ndmmxiaomayi SG

No way that the whole of nation will threaten him because people have different likes. Laughing

Anyway, whoever that idiot is, serves him right for writing such a post and getting people to threaten him. He should know better how to deal, rather than write these funny comments. It's time that he improves on his people-handling skills or this matter won't end.

They still don't get it that RIAA-style on Singaporeans won't work. By the way, for the curious, RIAA is fighting a losing battle in the US. Computer experts are there to testify that the RIAA is doing something very wrong.

If Singapore got experts who would do the same... Rolling Eyes

hisoka SG

d/ling as wrong, depends on viewpoint. To some pple it can be justified if they cannot get that quality of subs from odex or elsewhere. giving a more extreme example to make it clear, take a video and send it to 2 places to sub. you get 2 videos 1 with lousy and near incoherent subs and poor video quality, the other is one with at least passable quality and english. assume the 1st is odex. and the other is your fansub. some pple would say because odex does not give you quality that the other side gives, it is ok to d/l the other one. in essense, because of the quality difference the become 2 totally different products even if the license might technically be the same.

and its just one example. i'm sure they got other justifications too.

odex keepig the money, i don't know seriously not enough infor. reasonable to assume either way or neither.

hisoka SG

yeah lor, but then again, i don't think singapore courts of law would be as independent as the US.

seow SG

Well, let him have a taste of fear, like how you felt when you first received the letter, maybe.

Mm...

If i can work part time this year, import craze. Twisted Evil

stellazio SG

If this stephen sing guy was in some other parts of the world, he'll be sodomized and killed by now.

Never ever gloat espeically if your case isn't a strong one.

I think its still in the grey as to why Odex can get the courts to make the ISP's cave in.

Anyway some singaporean businessman should capitalize on the hatred against odex whether blindly or not and sell cheaper better quality anime.

Or even better if we do something like an itunes in singapore. Laughing

Xephone_xenon SG

The reason why RIAA is lousy is because the america is truly democratic.
And the people in america see privacy laws more strictly then copyright laws.
You do not have things like this in SG.
You break law, you is bloody criminal, please pay the legal fees or face music.

ndmmxiaomayi SG

But what ODEX thinks is different. They don't care about quality, what they care is that you must get it legally and that is, through them.

We can all sit here and argue till no day no night, we have to see their point of view.

ODEX - must get legally

Fans - I want good quality, no good quality, I go illegal. You threaten me, I pay up, but I will do it again.

These two issues, on the surface is the same, but when you tear them apart, it's totally two different issues to settle. ODEX doesn't care, so do we.

ndmmxiaomayi SG

It's not about being independent, but whether they want to fight it out. In the US, the experts are willing to. Here? The kindest word I will say is the F word.

Xephone_xenon SG

Lets look at your post.

You concluded all your paragraph in a way whereby you agree there are some sort of controversies here
And there are things that we arent certain off.

Which is correct. This could very well lead to a good debate.
Which would certainly bright light to this issue. And this may benefit the anime community in a way or another.

But if you take a peek into the way HWZers post.
Its a different story.
They are just jumping into conclusions and cooking up stories in a way they like.
And it only takes one buy to cook up some lame ass story. The rest will believe and follow.
Its a freaking joke there.

And again.
People simply refuse to believe or consider the point whereby downloading anime is WRONG.

ndmmxiaomayi SG

Yes, they do and we don't have such things. But it also brings out another issue. What we are hearing and seeing, is just one side, and that side is the person suing you.

The lawyer helping you will say listen to them, do the right thing, and help you get discounts if possible.

Either way, fighting such lawsuits here is like standing out in a freak weather waiting to be strike by lightning. What matters is luck. If lucky, survive. Not lucky, game over.
