Browsing the forum is indeed duplicating data. But the permission is implicitly granted by the creator. Or else why would it be hosted on the Internet in the first place?

it is not that grey as we used to imagine.

it is still copyright infringement liable for criminal if not civil charges from whomever is pursuing the anti-piracy crusade. it is only by choice they do not, but if required, they can use these to supplement their case.

the letter someone posted in vr-zone, if i remember right, it specifically targets animes that are licensed in singapore.

The law basically works on an eye for an eye.
So if someone is downloading without uploading, the person is only making a single copy. That person is liable for a single charge.

If the person uploads, he's making multiple copies for everyone, also known as distributing without rights. That's multiple charges.

Because of this, the RIAA isn't really catching people who are downloading. They are catching people who are uploading.

I'm pretty sure they catch downloaders too.

For those people who download like 5 episodes of anime per month, how much are they really liable to be charged? Not much, unless there's a fixed minimum amt stated amount stated in the Copyright Act.

i think there is, it was mentioned there was a stapled copyright infringement damage amount that a person's download has to reach before it can be consider "significant" enough to be liable for criminal charges, or/and the copyright infringement is done in the purpose of financial gains.

juz dat this amount or how much is considered "significant" was never known to the public.

You know, this really pisses me off whenever they try to restrict us from getting any form of anime. Heck, I don't even feel Singapore is not a democratic anymore, it's turning much into a dictatorship, just like Nazi Germany, and a money-minded country instead of its old, people-minded views. What? Wanna watch anime? Buy it from ODEX? They have a lousiest quality called subs ever! I've bought once from them, 'Love Hina', and guess what? I can barely make out the subs as the words were warped! What i do? I gave it to a friend of mine and said good riddance to that only bought anime.

Fansubs does their jobs way, way better than any licensed companies, as they are more dedicated to the shows, and more concerned on the people who are watching it, not money. Seriously, if the term 'Money is the root of all evil', is correct, then Singapore and its money-mindedness is pissing me off.

Yes, I'm a Singaporean as well, but I cannot agree to this calibre these so-called 'legal action' are doing. Hmph, they are just monopolising the industry that has yet to be captured in the wrong hands. Idiots they are... Maybe they are just little whiners like these...
