Yes. I had two students who spoke basic level English but grammar was good. I was very appreciative of my advanced students. I had five who had spent time in the US so I could joke with them. They were so advanced, I taught them more slang than anything. Laughing My other two advanced students majored in English at a Japanese University. I would print out a news article and we'd dissect it for an hour, something which I really enjoyed.

Those are exceptional cases but on the whole the English level here is bad.Japan is the probably the only country where you teach any language using only Japanese.Here we do writing,listening,reading and speaking (which is the most important) last.I am talking about the public schools here where you can throw your TESOL degree out the window.In the Juku systems.....different schools have their own teaching strategy and besides the students there are paying customers.
Nova pays wells but you work hard for your money too.For those interested in teaching in Japan you might want to check out the Jet program and for experience teachers you can try working for the City Board of Education directly but there are not too many around.Interac and the others are just bloodsuckers.

I met a Jet program teacher via one of the cooking forums I frequent. She was miserable and absolutely hated it. So much so she only served one year of her 2-year stint. She was "dumped" near Fukuoka in a very ulu part of Japan. The pay was miserable too and she was better off back in England doing what she used to do. She stayed with me on her way up to Narita for home.

When I lived in Yokosuka, some of my fellow military wives had such a good gig teaching English in high schools. Many didn't want to leave but had no choice.

high School is not so bad,at this level student start to realise the importance of English
Elementary is fun but some teachers can be very childish and irritating too.Junior High is a real madhouse.JuKU is hard work.Teaching adults and business English is best Very Happy
