I think MS will be the biggest fool if their OS cannot be used for gaming. I should say right now all games runs on 32bit plus DirectX10 is still at its infant stage. 64 bit computing is a great leap from 32.

Once there is a demend for Vista, there will be enough reason and more money to improve on the product.

The combinations of notebook models is lesser than that for DIY PC hardware builds. Its a question that can be readily answered.

The biggest problem is always money and whether it is enough.

Wait until you go university and got a budget of 10k to buy notebook i answer for Jay. Meanwhile keep the 478pin processor computer, it can still serve your gaming needs for years ahead. Very Happy

well said farmer, again jay, do you really need the mobility offered by the laptop.Just because everyone in poly is getting a laptop does not mean you must get one .In this case, a diy desktop would serve your needs very well.Since you can bring out 3k for a laptop, why not just invest a little more about 1.5k, to get yourself a decent desktop.The price for C2D looks quite good for the time being.As for vista, i suggest you hold your horses before getting one since it is plagued by driver problems and compatibility issues now.

As for your old com ,it is still rather good for normal web surfing, word processing and old games(pre 2005).Don't expect the latest game to run smoothly on it.

i would suggest the opposite actually, that is, to get a good laptop, then totally dispense with your desktop.

Like my case, i got my pc first, then got my laptop(3 years later). Then when my pc spoilt 4 years later. I realised I can actually survive on the laptop alone.

My laptop works as a desktop. When i bring to office, it is my desktop for work. After work, i play games with it. I can always back up my work in office desktop.

Then in weekends, I bring back laptop for home use, like surf web, etc. That is, if you are the only one using the computer.

Just get a backup HDD for data backup on important stuff or personal stuff.

Just my 2 cents.

Some courses and Polytechnics truely requires a sudent to use a mobile computing device. Be it a show off or neccesity don't really matter to me, just to the ones affected maybe. If its only the 2 games TS were playing then there is no need to upgrade. If its vista TS wants then its all the reason to upgrade or not to upgrade.

For me i will just wait until Vista is ready, otherwise i am not worry because other software vendors will come out with something that most computer users want. Because we all want an OS that allow us to do what we are doing now everyday and its better if the applications can be done in a shorter time frame.

as for me, i realised that i dont need laptop at all… i bought because i heard people say that poly need it.. but then its cowdunk. i only bring laptop to sch 3 times so far. i’d rather spend $1633 on a desktop… the performance also better. now i treat my laptop as my PC liao.. everything external.. speakers.. keyboard, mouse..except screen

I won't disagree with you in your case. But for me its the opposite. I watch some amount of TV and videos and backing them up requires more DVD media and Sata drives (i don't use external drives because its easier and more cost effective to work with internal drives after overcoming the portablility and accessibility issue). I don't really need a notebook for my work and i can always backup the data at my workplace with my own old humble external hard disk. I have thought of getting a one-in-all notebook but considering my diversified usage (some gaming, browsing, file sharing, video, TV etc) and the many options to upgrade and interchange parts (just getting a new LCD when i feel mine is too small or the display has burnt itself out) i guess i am taking another road different from yours.

choose one dat best fits you and ur budget. For me, i got a not so gd laptop coz i had my budget constraint (my gf always laughing at my laptop for being a single core, hers is duo core and dat time core 2 duo was not out yet) and now i am planning to change to core 2 duo

CPU or laptop? if u are going poly, i suggest u get a powerful laptop. 3k for a laptop, u can get very good ones.

for the time being, i dun recommend u to change to vista, if u going poly, nvr ever consider vista, the software dat poly might wan u to install for ur course might not be vista compatible, so dun take the risk. win XP service pack 3 is going to be out, so from this, i think dat XP will still be arnd for quite sometime.

and i think the offer dat dell computer has (dey hav some promotions dun dey?), the part where dey offer vista home basics, is retarded, because, for a laptop running on vista home basics, doesnt seems logical to me.

i noe wins XP home edition cannot be used in a network environment (example campus' wireless network), so anyone noes if windows vista home basics can actually be used ina network environment??

acer...dats the brand of my laptop....

i slam it on the floor once (coz i was damn angry n upset), n it still worked perfectly fine, juz dat one part came off but i fixed it back. another time when i carried my laptop across the singapore custom i dropped it on the floor while trying to put it into the x-ray scanner.....but it still worked perfectly fine and only a small dent in the casing....

dun buy IBM if u are gaming....dey dun offer good graphics....but is damn durable, dats wad i heard.....

Sata HDD is more Faster than non-sata.
