A platform without casing, can't channel heat away from motherboard and components.

With a casing, the installed fans (provided installed strategically) can create a wind tunnel effect to draw heat away from invisible hotspots.

Hotspots can kill a system.

okay..casing also provide grounding and protection to the user and the system hardware assembled...it also prvents the computer from interfering with other electrical appliances nearby. most of all the design of a case determines how pretty, hot or sexy u wan your comp to be hehe

but when i build a new system for a trial startup i always do it first without the case..habit
