Instead of complaining about the current shortfalls of our
governmental policies, why not listen to the
alternatives/suggestions of our opposition parties and how viable
those suggestions are?
My main issue with the Workers' Party is that they seem to go
along and echo the complains of various sectors of our populace
without actually giving a concrete/viable plan to how they are
going to actually run the bloody nation.
Never should you oppose the Singaporean government (PAP) for the
sheer sake of opposing, nor should you blindly support PAP
either.
Having travelled to other
nations around Southeast asia for holidays/community service
projects, Singapore has been good to me, my family and my friends.
Perhaps the policies are not to the people's best interests, but
they are still sound and are capable of providing a roof over our
heads, enough food to survive and an education system which allows
for studious people to succeed if they have the will and desire to
do so.
Even so, such an argument that we 'Should be glad for what we
have' is not a good argument for debate either. There certainly are
issues and policies that can be changed for the better, and things
that can certainly be improved upon.
Looking the issues with other
nations and their politics, one can certainly say that there will
forever be a section of the populace who will feel "hard
done"/"injustice" done towards them and their fathers, while
another section would feel glad for what the government has done
for them.
The best party that can be in charge of Singapore should be the
party that is in charge of Singapore. What I fear is that with the
voting of more opposition members and parties, what we get is not a
better Singapore but one that is divided over her own policies and
becoming just another nation that becomes a joke of a government
(All talk and no work done). As much as we can hate on our current
government, I think we should all give credit where it is due and
give criticisms when it should be given. Voting in opposition
members for the sake of hating on the PAP, instead of voting for
the person who would truly benefit your community and Singapore as
a whole would be the absolute wrong move, and do no benefit but for
your own egoistic needs.
It also closely resembles our current societal attitudes, the
"ME" attitude of the 21st century. I would believe that quite a
number of people on Singaporean forums are of the newer generation,
the more technologically savvy generation (I myself included).
Everything should be for my OWN BENEFIT, if something does not
benefit me or my friends/family, then it should be changed to suit
my OWN NEEDS. And if things do not go MY WAY, then I will complain
to high heavens instead of buckling down and finding a solution on
your own. (Sorry, but even while reading this I feel like it's
overly simplistic and that I'm merely generalising an entire
section of Singapore into a certain category, but I do strongly
feel that most of us can relate to such attitudes in ourselves to a
certain/great extent!) Sad...
