I expect Icemoon will say the system fails if a drunken father
asked his sober son who is an authorized driver to blow the
breathalyzer to start the engine and then allow the drunked father
to drive. Yes, that can happen and I concede that if people want to
cheat that badly, they'll find a way. However it is also easier to
catch them. If they get into an accident, it is easy to know who
blew into the machine and if they cheated, both get punished.
Such a machine will also prevent people from driving under
suspension like Paris Hilton. If she is suspended, her DNA goes
into the registry and she will not be able to activate any vehicle
in the country if she applies to be an authorized driver of any
car.
It is good for insurance companies too. A 40 year old man without
any traffic offences at all should get much lower premiums compared
to a 20 year old with a string of speeding violations. Indeed, if a
father wants to register his speed demon of a son as an authorized
driver of his car, he will have to pay more insurance
premiums.
With a machine like this, there will not be stories of teenagers
stealing the family car for a joy ride. They will not be able to
start the engine.
