fudgester SG When it comes to seafood, if I'm not wrong, catfish and crustaceans are considered makruh by three of the Sunni mazhabs (Hanabali, Shafie, Maliki). I think the mazhab Hanafi only allows scaled fish.
fudgester SG I'd go in-depth, but the arguments for and against declaring catfish and crustaceans halal are really complex. Frankly speaking, I won't know where to start. Lots of scholars have been debating over this to no end. Read this discussion thread and you'll get an idea of the debate: http://www.paklinks.com/gs/archive/index.php/t-176979.html As for me, I just follow the majority viewpoint that crustaceans are alright based on the following verse, which makes states that 'the produce of the sea' is lawful: To hunt and to eat the food of the sea is made lawful for you, a provision for you and the seafarers -Surah Al-Maidah (The Table) Verse 5:96
fudgester SG Correct. That leaves out amphibians. I suppose that's why scholars have been divided over the issue of crustaceans, which can live on both land and water.
