Correct it was Yaohan....I also remembered at Plaza Singapura...2nd floor...PONDEROSA SALAD RESTAURANT....buffet style...could eat as much you want for a very reasonable price...they had steaks, sandwiches, burgers and fish n chips too in their menu.

In late 70s and early 80s, national minimum wage was $250 per month. Overtime rate was 2.5 per hour. And for office workers if the management needed you to work during the weekend (Sunday) they paid you double salary and on holiday was triple salary. If you stayed work after 6 pm you could get your dinner allowance, after 8 or 9 pm bus fare reimbursement and after midnight taxi fare reimbursement.

Office work was 40 hrs work week and in some companies even less than 40 hrs work week. More rest and quality time with families, relatives and friends.

CPF contribution was 25 per cent for employer and 25 per cent for employee until after recession in middle of 80s….20/20 for employer and employee.

National Productivity achievement was good.

I used to patronized that place with my girlfriend and after that we would go to the small park across the road exactly opposite Plaza Singapura and talk more...there was a small coffee house in that park too...We drank coffee or tea, ate and talk for many hours. Its now somerset mrt station.

Exactly opposite Plaza Singapura...and if from penang road, it was exactly opposite happy valley restaurant...very expensive chinese restaurant.

Planet paradigm? I 'm not sure which area you talking about. Well, beside Plaza Singapura, there was this steep steps going to the top, we called it the 100 steps and once you reach at the top...there was this old St Margaret Girl School....and other landed houses and buildings....old NAFA students will know this place...because if they went for their courses...they either went through within PS and exited through the backdoor they would reach nearly the top part of the 100 steps and if its closed they had to walk-up the 100 steps....next to PS..

Yes, I know abt the steps... It's between Plaza Sing and Cathay now...

Previously was named Old School, but I think they are not closing off that place, or something I heard... It used to be a nice place to catch fireworks for me before they built SOTA that blocked off the view...

Yes, the top of the steps there was a terrace for you to walk and a place to sit down…its a perfect place to view some parts of the towns…

Thanks for sharing the blog…during my time of gotong royong was in the 60s and 70s when I was still a little boy living in the kampong…after we shifted to hdb flats in early 70s…there weren’t any gotong royong…

In the early 80s, I still remembered the Bookworm Club company at Selegie House. Their staffs would go around to primary schools to tell stories to the students there and sell their bookworm books to them. My girlfriend was working as a graphic artist for this company. I knew the husband and wife personally who owned this company. Most of the staffs knew me too because I used to fetch and waited for my girlfriend after work and after that we would go out somewhere in town. I don't know whether this is the same bookworm gang you're referring to. About world trade centre, I used to see my MNC clients in this building.

Ah no wonder you don't know about the small coffee house within the park that was opposite plaza singapura...by the late 80s and early 90s that coffee house demolished...that place has changed quite abit. During the late 80s and early 90s in Singapore, I was already driving my own car too and hardly took public transport. In the 70s that place of orchard central now was a hawker area but in the 80s it was only a car park.
