ShrodingersCat SG Many of my good friends are teachers too... I teach myself, but I am not an MOE teacher. I think it is good if you can bring up how this pay rise would not solve existing problems in retaining teaching staff - i agree that it is very relevant. What really needs to happen is for the guys up there to have a PARADIGM SHIFT - and realise that results is not the ONLY way of measuring performance. But that's the crap all teachers go through, you see. Some choose to leave, your friend is leaving soon. BUT the reality is some stay - what do you think is in it for those who take the crap and stay? i am sure they don't remain in the profession just for money.
birkin SG Teaching cannot be that bad rite..if it is bad as how some of you put it, there won't be thousands who keep applying every year. Every job has its pros and cons,what..I'm sure even a 9 - 6pm (or even longer, due to OT) job has its own set of problems too.
nightzip SG So like that just 3 years, can get $4,600 a month??!!! We, engineers, slogged from 9am to 8pm everyday only $3k-$4k nia. KNS. The better performing ones, makes about top 20% of new teachers, about 1 out of 5 teachers, gets $5,000 to $5,200 a month!!!??
nightzip SG Yah lor, if teaching is a passion, it is the same as ANY profession right? If you feel stressed, then quit and find a non-teaching job.
huiz SG [quote]Originally posted by Daddy!!: [b] (a) there are only 1000 vacancies left for those who think of becoming teachers. but how many will stay on? they have 29,000 teachers now and 3% leaving the service every year. that is about 870 teachers leaving every year. wow...
googoomuck SG The teachers that left already said that money is not a considering factor for staying or leaving the job. Many of them who left had the passion to teach. Only the mediocre ones, I'm sorry to say, thought about the money and stayed. It's the job itself. There's no job satisfaction. It sucks. It's frustrating. It's the bureaucracy. That's the way nincompoops at the top solve problems. Pay more at taxpayers' expense.
birkin SG Errr......how come it's stated that a teacher teaching for 3 years can get up to $58k a year?? Isn't that over estimating? Can any teacher confirm this?? And no offence, but to people who are abit sour grapes abt teachers' pay increase, why not join the profession yourself? As long as you have a degree from the 3 main Unis, you can go in smoothly.
ShrodingersCat SG snort - r u a teacher? no MONEY can make that amount of crap most teachers face feel better about it man! There are MOE teachers i know who really could not handle the crap at work. But they may leave MOE, but you can't take the passion for teaching out of a person who really have a passion for it. Some of them end up teaching for far less pay at other places, such as special schools. i am not saying that those who leave have no passion for teaching. They have their own priorities and beliefs about life and quality of life. but i think it is bloody unfair to say ONLY the mediocre ones stay.
birkin SG I think EVERY job out there has elements of frustration, suckiness and bureaucracy- not only teaching.
Daddy!! SG teachers are probably one of the the first batches to reach first world standard in terms of salary. some time ago, many people complained that the govt did not take care of Singaporeans. I think most teachers are Singaporeans and they are taken care of by the govt. the moral of the story is that the opposition parties in Singapore who wanna use poverty or lack of money or low income of Singaporeans to move people to fight for democracy will lose because the govt controls the money. it is easy for the govt to "release" the funds and make the opposition looook stupid.
charlize SG You said it. Government controls Singapore's money and will make the opposition look stupid by using Singaporeans' money.
Daddy!! SG so far, the opposition parties are fighting a losing battle. they should play more strategy games.
ShrodingersCat SG so am I - read my post properly! don't u think it is unfair to say that ONLY MEDIOCRE teachers remain in MOE for the money?? geez..
kin0 SG I think they should. It’s a very challenging career with big responsibility; that is, if you are a responsible teacher.
googoomuck SG OK. That's your opinion of MOE teachers.. I have no quarrel with teachers in special schools. The pay is low. They are also professionally trained to teach children with special needs. They make financial sacrifice. I respect them for making the sacrifice. They are the ones that need a raise. I'm not sure if they are included in the MOE's pay adjustment announcement.
ShrodingersCat SG They are not But i hope when the time comes that they finally do get a raise, people will not say that their work is less worthwhile because they get more money for it.
woodlandsHool SG other then the garments .. i personally hink teaching prof deserve a raise cause well , to me they hv no limit .. cause they r the only professionals that can seriously make or break one's future ... if monetary gain can mould them to be better and more professional , jolly well to it *above doesnt apply to garment sector though...lol
