In America there is still much rural and isolated countryside. The nearest neighbour could be miles away. Police response may seem like forever if someone is in trouble. Americans are very particular about home turf privacy. Against intruders or wild animals that might threaten the livestock, guns are a must for some people.

So what if Singapore forbids gun ownership? People who deserve to die can still be cut into pieces. However, Im against animal abusehee

yes, but majority of folks living in US is in suburban area.
if guns are found in farms or forest lodges, no problem.....but a city like New York and Virginia where there's no animals and everything is in the public eye?

one can cut others into different pieces with a sword or knife, but a gun is a very different thing.
if the korean nerd in the virginia tech killings use a katana instead of a machine gun, u think he can kill 32 folks? it'll be a challenge for him to reach even 5.

Your logic doesn't make much sense, you're pretty much saying to prevent shootings we need to give more civillians guns. They should ban firearms entirely and the entire thing wouldn't even have happened.

Lol...it was like the argument put forth by some people during the V.Tech shooting...say if the students were allowed to bring in guns, the shooter would have been put down in a short time.

But I think a war would be more likely to break out within the school, lol.

Some people here are saying citizens should be allowed to carry weapons so governments cannot opress them, someone else is saying rural areas need protection because of far distance to police.

Which other country is like America?

Which other country is applying the principle, let's allow the people to have weapons, so government cannot oppress them. I dont know any countries doing this, mostly they apply democracy or parliament of some sort for this purpose.

Also people in rural areas or isolated areas can have weapons to protect themselves. Which countries apply this principle?

I dont think in America they do it because of those reasons. Mostly it's because of the constitution. Since the constitution says it, it affects people and their thoughts and the society. There are people who say, the right to bear arms is an inalienable right of each and every citizens guaranteed in constitution.

So, like this, how to argue? There is a school of thought that people 'have the right to bear arms'. But if they think in a society people have the 'right' to equip themselves with lethal weapons, if lethal weapons are circulating around, then dont be surprised accidents happen.

It's all the 'fault' of the constitution. It sets the foundational stone for all the views and beliefs of that society. A large section of their society will never escape from the view that carrying arms is a 'right'. I dont think their brethrens in UK, Canada, Australia have this problem.

If you follow the news, youll notice a pattern that lead to the killing.
The signs are similar to what Cho Hseong Hui had been through.

The killer was a maladjusted youth he could not cope with the demands and stresses of daily living. Incidentally he also had emotional problems and was tactlessly sent to a mental house for evaluation. It must have pissed him off. Plus he had been a bully victim and had met with a series of unfortunate events. All these caused great damage to his psyche and he just snapped.

The killings should prompt the need to identify and to provide the correct mode of treatment for maladjusted people.
