My two cents.
There is joy in modification. I don't suppose you've spent a sunday
in your own driveway fixing/helping friends or family change spark
plugs, oils of the older 80s pocket rockets like the Karmann Golf
GTi, Maseratis, the older Porsches with K-Jetronic mechanical
injections, and even doing self-tuning of carburettors, especially
the good old twin or quad-jets.
I grew up seeing and participating in those.. so I can safely say
that yes, although it is easier to buy a whole new car, the garage
experience is something enjoyable. Though we may not be able to get
our hands greasy installing our own turbochargers, the very same
sense of anticipation that one gets when your car is slowly turned
into an extension of your personality, is still prevalent.
If it's mere stickers and electronic BOVs used to look and sound
fast, those are poseurs.
But why tear enthusiasts up just because they don't fit your narrow
sense of logic?
Or is it just that not many people are lucky enough to hang around
garages as a kid and fill their heads with amazement watching the
going-ons?
