Shooting with Eye-Protection

I wear prescription glasses, and you'd think that they would suffice as eye protection. However, there have been several occasions while shooting pistols with erratic ejection patterns (my Steyr M40 comes to mind) when the spent case would eject straight up, ricochet off the shooting stall crossmember and end up wedged between my eyelid and glasses. This can be somewhat annoying, not to mention painful.

For this reason, I now pack a baseball cap in my range bag.

Well, I'm glad I had my Oakleys on when I was firing a Glock 17 last week. It was a well-used (read training) weapon, and apart from a lot of IAs, it was also spitting cartridges everywhere:

That cartridge would have smacked me in the eye if I wasn't wearing them Oakleys. Got a mark on my forehead when another cartridge flew right into me.

Does that Glock 17 belong to you? What type of IAs were you experiencing? FTFeed? FTExtract? Most of those types of problems (and the inconsistent ejection pattern) can usually be traced to a worn-out extractor claw.

sigh luckily the repirator that i wore was a different model than the ones supplied to the engineers or the ones used during basic chem def package so still able to shoot, In mopp 4 if can pass fantastic already no need to think abt getting the money. The basic chem def package respirator one how to shoot, kanasai the canister in front of face. But still the one SOF was using to me the best, well thought and well designed

Nah, it was a club weapon. I was just trying it out with a view to getting into pistol shooting later down the track.

I don't think it was just the extractor claw that was worn out - the whole weapon was pretty much stuffed. One out of every 7-10 rounds was not feeding and the hammer failed to c0ck at about the same rate. Still and all, I'm not too displeased with the result at 20 metres, considering that it was my first time shooting pistols:

That hole in the arrow came about when I squeezed the trigger and nothing happened. As I was reaching to rack the slide back, I took pressure off the trigger and it discharged. Scared the bejeezus out of me.

Holy Sh*t!!! That's the problem with handling firearms that ain't yours. Just like driving a car that ain't yours. You do not know the condition of it. Personally saw this guy cock his M16 and it fired off. Now that's something new to me.

Oh yeah, seen that one before - the weapon was so thoroughly clogged with carbon the firing pin stuck in place. It was a newly-issued weapon and it wasn't the firer's fault, but he copped seven extras anyway.

Nice grouping for a first-time pistol shooter!

However, I find it eminently disturbing that the club would irresponsibly let an obviously malfunctioning firearm be used for shooting. On the surface, it would seem that safety is not a high priority at this club.

Much to your credit, the hole in the target from the unintentional discharge tells me that you were conscientiously observing the paramount safety rule of always pointing a loaded firearm downrange. Very Happy

LOL! Of course he knows his firearms safety. Our friend here is one of SAF's finest, the Commando. The Commandos are the SAF's special forces unit.

Thanks, MG! I did take my time with my shots because I was focussing on getting the grip right. There's still a bit of work to be done, but I'm not displeased with the initial results.

Shotgun, MG already knows me reasonably well, but thanks for the intro anyway! Very Happy It's been 13 years since I last fired a gun, but I was particularly mindful of the fact that a misplaced 9mm could rapidly spoil someone's day. Mr. Green

I am using my Club’s Glock 17s . I must have fired more than a thousand rounds so far. The Glocks have NEVER failed to feed or extract or fire. I have used Berettas and CZs and they are less reliable than Glocks.

I don't doubt that the Glock 17's a good weapon, but this one I was using had passed a thousand rounds a long, and I mean long, time ago. I also fired a H&K USP Expert and a Tangfolio Silver Custom, and neither weapon gave me problems.

A firearm is merely a mechanical device that can and will malfunction if it is worn out and/or poorly maintained. Even the über-reliable Glock is not exempt from that dictum.

I do not own any Glock pistols, but have fired them on occasion. They reliably go bang when you pull the trigger and are reasonably accurate, but I never did warm up to the spongy trigger and the (for me) excessively raked grip angle.

Guys, for those of you who need prescription, I'd suggest you look into getting something like the ESS with the Rx insert. Your daily prescription glasses is not going to do the job unless it clearly is made from similar materials.

Spec-Ops, if you thinking about getting a pair of ESS, let me know. That $120 price in Singapore is ridiculous. I've just outfitted a unit in Malaysia with the new ESS Naro (for smaller faces).

I also just received a sample of a their Tactical Kit prototype based on a recommendation I made several months back that full-time shooters do not like to change out their lenses; we prefer two separate frames so the new Tac kit comes with 2 frames and 3 lenses but this will not be available until next year.

Looking forward to the pictures too. The lenses of my prescription glasses have a couple of tiny nicks from being dinged by ejected brass, and this ESS thing sounds like a better solution.

I'll wear workshop safety goggles over my regular prescription glasses when shooting the boomers (like my .454 Casull Ruger SRH), but it's very uncomfortable as the goggles are oversized and tend to slide off under recoil.

Hmm its sounds like ESS systems would be good for you. Most of their shooting glasses and goggles allow prescription lenses with their RX-inserts. BUT, it means u need to go get the lenses cut to fit the RX-inserts. I recommend contact lenses instead. =)

Alright guys, you saw it first on the SGForum! ESS' new Tactical Kit (prototype) complete with their new uber-tactical case that has a MALICE clip on the back, what for I have no idea but is besides the point I guess.
