(SG Defence Minister )Mr Teo said: "If you look at North
Korea, they are testing longer and longer range missiles.
South Asia also, various countries have developed longer range
missiles. We don't expect they'll be a direct threat to us, but the
fact of the matter is we are within their range rings. Prior to
that, we were not.
"So if you're prudent, you'll take that into account. What it does
mean is that when we define our next generation of air defence
systems, we'll have to see to what extent we need to take into
account the ability to detect, protect against systems of this
type.".....
....MINDEF is also looking into the possibility of replacing or
augmenting aging equipment such as the E2-C Hawkeye which has been
in service since the 1980s.
But the effectiveness of the SAF is bringing these different weapon
systems across the Army, Navy and Air Force together.

Defence engineers have also been working on the Lalee,
or low altitude long-enduring endurance, a large aircraft that can
fly unmanned or be piloted manually.
It is designed to fly at around 18,000m(59,000 sf), above the
airways and below satellite surveillance systems, possibly serving
as an integrated airborne surveillance and communications system,
to provide continuous coverage over a large area.

LALEE
We have just completed a 3 year long study of LALEE which is an
integrated airborne surveillance and communications system designed
to provide continuous temporal coverage over a very large
area. Providing a task group operating in the littorals
with continuous surveillance from the air with this class of UAV
will be considerably cheaper than operating current generation of
surveillance and communications platforms. The technology is there
but whether Navies will to want to invest in this class of UAV will
depend on their perceived need for a continuous coverage
platform.

This project is associated with Lockheed's High Altitude Airship
program, which is intended to soar at over 65,000 feet
for over a month at a time, and could also play a significant role
in ballistic missile and cruise missile defense.

The
LALEE -Low Altitude Long Enduring
Endurance aircraft is a good example of such
an aircraft. It has an operating ceiling of 60,000 feet
and an endurance of up to 18 hours. This means that
it is able to provide continuous surveillance over very large
areas,
making it suitable for tri-service usage for armed forces
through
out the world.
