True... The JSF is meant as a replacement for the F-16, F/A-18,
A-10 and AV-8B. Thus it is a multi-role aircraft that will fulfil
several roles. Any project that is 'joint' will probably result in
a fair aircraft with medium performance. This is unlike the F/A-22A
which represents the highest end of warplane performance
today.
The current F-16s that we have are advanced models that will
continue to pack a punch beyond 2010. However, when the need arises
to replace them due to old age, it is unlikely that we will procure
more powerful twin-engined fighters given the rapidly escalating
costs of combat aircraft. Given the SAF's policy of 'cost
effectiveness' and a close leaning towards Washington for the
supply of military hardware, buying the JSF seems the only route
our air force will take. It is unlikely that we will consider other
single-engined options that will still be in production such as the
JAS-39 Gripen or the projected Sukhoi S-55. Thus its not a matter
of choice for the RSAF. The route has already been paved for us due
to political issues or concerns of cost.
