Kevlar is actually one of the more well-known and documented
types of materials used for Ballistic Resistant Vest, or what is
otherwise known as Bullet Proof Vests.
Bear in mind, Bullet Proof Vest is actaully a mis-nomer, as you can
always find a bigger, or faster bullet to defeat the existing
armour around. The industry term is Ballistic Resistant Vest, or
Body Armour.
Kevlar is from the Aramid family, there are also other types of
materials, such as High Density PolyEthylene (HDPE) and PBO.
Weight wise, Kevlar is actually quite heavy compared to HDPE in
terms of performance. However, it is also cheaper as
material.
There will always be confliscitng trade-offs if one is to design
body armour as a LBV. Body Armour is meant to protect critical
areas, therefore, there is generally coverage at shoulder areas and
groin areas, which means greater impediment to agility and
movement.
Body Armour will be donn depending on the mission profile.
