As a matter of fact, Jap soldiers are not as deadly as many believed. Jap soldiers appeared deadly, because they striked fear into the heart of their enemies...

me 2nd year =) I really hope we do not go to war with malaysia.. In fact i think we should work together with our neighbouring countries for the safety of South East Asia.

sgdiehard SG

don't think any singaporean or the garbement wants to go to war with malaysia or anybody. It is important to note that water is a matter of survival for singapore and is not trivial.

The singaporean tourists is the most important income for jb, may be not johore as a state, but I don't understand why you said without malaysia there would be no singapore. singapore will survive, with or without malaysia. we used to have the growth triangle, involving singapore, jb and bataam but jb chose to compete with singapore instead of working together.
They had rules that literally forced local manufacturers to use ports at pelapas instead of singapore. It was the arrogance of some stupid heads in PSA that enable them to win over two major PSA clients to pelapas.

We will have to compete, we will work for peace, but we have to be prepared to handle random acts of madness, which occurred several times in the past.

True, fighting with Malaysia will be really sad cos we are really one people. We eat the same food and it's very hard to even tell the difference between the Singlish that we speak and the "Malaysia-glish" that they speak. This is especially true when you are in a foreign country and you hear someone speaking like us. But upon a friendly enquiry "Singaporeans is it?" they might proudly announce "No, Malaysians lah."

But still, war with Malaysia remains very possible. I'm sure no one fails to notice that nearly ALL wars are fought between neighbouring countries. I mean you have to be near enough to wallop each other, right? Of course there are exceptional cases like US-Iraq Gulf War. Otherwise, it is always neighbour on neighbour.

Even in WW2, Germany and Japan first started the nonsense with their neighbours.

Malaysia doesn't buy a single Singapore-manufactured weapon or ordnance to my knowledge. Or maybe Singapore doesn't offer to sell weapons and ammo to Malaysia. Anyone knows why?

Whereas Indonesia, Philippines and Burma have all purchased ST goodies. I think this is a sign that Malaysia - maybe to a very small extent - does prepare for war with Singapore. Or maybe it's just pride on the Malaysian side.

gary1910 SG

It is pride and image, how could they display a weapons made in SG where they themselves have no indigeous weapons at all!!! Laughing

Anyway as you said, SG have sold weapons to practically all the core ASEAN members, so far I have gathered are as follow:

Thailand:
M-16 rifles.
3 Prabrarapak class FACs
SAR-80s rifles.
Bofor 40mm L/70
CIS 40mm AGL

Philippines:
Ultimax100 SAW
Armbrust LAW
CIS 40mmAGL
2 Blue Horizon UAV

Indonesia:
Ultimax100 SAW
CIS 40mmAGL
CIS 50HMG
In 1997 ,4~5 FH-88s
Upgraded AMX-13s to SM1 standard.

Brunei:
3 Waspada class FACs
300 Armbrust LAW

As you see, most of our neighbours bought weapons from us, I think they dun see us as a threat or strategic reason.

One thing, Brunei is pretty close to us, we practically help them to build up their armed forces, so is there more SG made weapons in Brunei??

tvdog SG

The question is:

Did Malaysia opt not to buy,

or

Did SG opt not to sell?

fudgester SG

Both, I'd say.

Lance_han SG

and yea, there's a third question i feel tat is unanswered..? Smile

*is there any external pressures that steered relations to wad they are now?*

We shouldn't think along the lines of "we'll definitely beat Malaysia in the event of a war". Some singaproeans are way too arrogant.

I do believe that we are militarily stronger than them, but the margin isn't much. Over the past 15 years, on average our defence budget is like 1.5 to 1.67 times that of Malaysia's.

From this figure, it is not hard to see that Singapore's superiority is minor, not that huge. Although we may be more efficient than them in using money, that still does not give us much of an edge.

If you look at the number of tanks we have as compared to say Taiwan or Yugoslavia, we are not really that good. There are many countries in the world that are ahead of us.

So overall, we are indeed stronger than Malaysia, but the difference is a small one, such that it is not sufficient to ensure military success in the event war breaks out.

Delta 5 SG

Apparently Brunei is evaluating the Bionix 25 IFV and Bronco ATTC, intending to acquire a small number of each to supplement their small armoured force.

They have also showed interest in similar weapons that Singapore purchases from other countries... Eg Consulted Singapore regarding a possible AH-64D Attack Helo purchase (4 - 6 units) from the United States.

sgdiehard SG

The Chinese says "jiao bing bi bai". Arrogant soldiers will lose the war. Even if they have the advantage in all aspects.

Singaporean must be aware that we have been referred to as little red dot, and our sovereignty and territory have been challenged time and again.

We need to be confident that we will win to stand firm in safeguarding our interests. We have the reason to be confident and such confidence should not be taken as arrogance.

tvdog SG

There's no such thing as definitely. Singapore is indeed a little red dot that can be assualted from all sides, and we do not have the land mass to slow an invasion force.

If we didn't succeed in fanning out our forces early to implement the Forward Defense, we'd be boxed up and the fight would be very not in our favour.

SMAPLionHeart SG

Thats why we have the E-2C which also acts as forward observers.

You would be dead once the enemy troops gather at Johor / Batam / Riau.

Once the troops is at Southern-most johor , pre-emptive strike is necessary.

If not , once they get inside SG , SG will be a hell-hole.
Imagine the amount of civilians killed in an urban battle. Question

We can't wait for people to attack.

It is less then a few minutes , so close to the Border.
I believe the E-2C Hawkeye has the ability to monitor ground movement with ease.

Once they have , say give or take 20,000 troops on your soil.
and attacking key areas.

With the serviceman UNABLE to reach their camps in time to draw arms.
Singapore is gone.

SMAPLionHeart SG

I believe every country has standby troops available in times of crisis.

What about Chinese New Year?

Question

SMAPLionHeart SG

Can we all withstand an offensive like Yom Kippur during Chinese New Year?

If intelligence services fail to detect any movements?

seancannot SG

With this question I assume you have not serve your NS

Shotgun SG

CNY will definitely have to rotate a few suay zengs to standby one. There is always a standby force.

storm_freaky13 SG

It is true.. although the best is not to fight with them but we must be ready at all times. About the E-2 i hope SG gets the Global Hawk quick… It will do our recon force alot of good.

BadzMaro SG

lol.. u guys remind me of people i know from Taiwan. THinking that they can defend.. n in the event.. counter attack the eastern side of China..its just a matter of time Laughing Any sustained artillery bombardment will pretty much flatten your entire country not to say totally disable the infra structure of your country. But lucky for us at the Borneo island. We are quite autonomous in our policy. We can sustain ourselves economically and militarilly. But i guess u guys wont be seeing any of our units in any event of war. We pride ourselves here for Jungle warfare.. not urban like yours. During the ethnic clashes in teh 1960's.. we operate like your Gurkha units in keeping the malays and malay soldiers from clashing with the chinese , and also the other way round.

i think war is bad for economics. Bad economics means no money. N the world revolves around money. Sg n Mal are pretty much the same.. Malaya pretty much took Sg n Borneo islands in to balance the ratio of Malay to Chinese during the post colonial times. I say war is for losers... i wanna make money Razz
