Well, if the Malaysian astronaut proves a handful, the Russian commander can always lure him into the airlock, shut the hatch behind him and hit the "cycle" switch.

That way, the Malaysians can rack up another "first": the first astronaut to perform an EVA without a pressure suit... Mr. Green

Billionaires Blasting Off

Space Adventures, which is selling around-the-moon jaunts for $100 million, is but one of several privately funded outfits in the space race

"Fly me to the moon," crooned Frank Sinatra -- a tune that Space Adventures CEO Eric Anderson hopes to be humming on his way to the bank in three or four years. Anderson's Arlington (Va.) company on Aug. 10 unveiled an audacious plan to establish around-the-moon treks as the ultimate status symbol for the filthy rich.

A ride will cost a cool $100 million, five times the $20 million price that Space Adventures charges for trips to the International Space Station. Dennis Tito and Mark Shuttleworth hopped up to the Space Station in 2001 and 2002, respectively. The third space tourist, entrepreneur Gregory Olsen, is slated to blast off on Oct. 1. .......

National pride, housing, clean and 24/7 water supply, low crime rate,
health services,..send Sg to moon or Mars....---all are important.

Lets pray the,CEO and Board of Directors of Sg ,Inc make the priority right.
Give adequate pocket money to needy student ,help the poor, sick, aged,
keep the tap ,lifts, roads, running 24/7 are 1000% important than putting a
National Flag on moon and Smile ---Take a very expensive photo.

It is difficult to resist the tempations not to be a big spenders when u know a e mail ,
asking fund manager to sell assets, then u can have billions to spend on Glory Projects.

Singapore should start an other fund raising drive to send a Singaporean to space in 2006. We can then use annual TV fund raising programmes to chalk up hundreds of millions to the Russian for a ride to the moon as well. Just make sure that our spaceman bring a BIGGER flag there to plant on the moon, better if Sg flags could be plant ALL OVER the moon.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) After sending its first astronaut into orbit two years from now, Malaysia is hoping for a giant leap forward that will land one of its citizens set on the moon by 2020, news reports said Sunday.

Malaysia plans to send an astronaut aloft in October 2007 aboard a Russian spacecraft. That mission will be the first step toward the moon landing, Science and Technology Minister Jamaludin Jarjis was quoted as saying by The Sunday Star newspaper.

We have to send several astronauts into space first before we can send one to the moon, he was quoted in another newspaper, the New Sunday Times, as saying.

The agreement with Russia to put a Malaysian into space was part of a deal to sell the Southeast Asian nation 18 Sukhoi military jets.

A total of 984 candidates had been shortlisted from 11,275 Malaysians who had applied to go into space. Physical tests will be conducted to select eight candidates for an eight-month training program in Russia, after which a final candidate will be chosen

Please don't joke abt this (although the roti canai part Very Happy ).

Why? Singapore also not above such 'stunts' to boost national pride. Why we go climb Everest/swim across English Channel?

Presumbly, we also laughed when the Malaysians climbed Everest back in 1997 as part as the "Boleh" campaign.

For the record, they will not be the first South East Asian to make it to space.
Vietnam had one cosmonaut (Colonel Pham Tuan) since the 1980s. If we cast the net wider, India, China, Japan all have sent people to space.

Wont be surprise a few years down the road if PAP decide to sent people to space.... (anyhow, the space suit is very suitable for them, mostly all whites!)

Ah.. I see the private / public money thing.

Same purpose mah, boost national pride. See our ministers so happy for our climber and swimmer?

I suppose SG gahment more smart, no need come up own pocket money, can get good press (free).

Frankly speaking, I think that it is easier for us to put a man in space than qualifying the world cup in 2020….sad to say man.

if i had that kind of money, i would like to travel to space too.
