What do u guys think abt the expansion of RSN capabilities and range,to prepare for possible containment of China hegemony and expansionism in the South China Sea as well as expand our sphere of operations further?

I think that perhaps we could do with an extra squadron of 6 stealth frigates,4-6 extra subs in the form of the Scorpene or new Viking-class by Sweden,and a squadron of Kongo-class Destroyers,which we can buy from Japan.

We certainly have the financial resources to deploy and maintain these assets,and we could reduce and minimise possible manpower problems through heavy automation like the Deltas.

to make up for possible manpower problems throughout the army as a whole,we can look at utilising British methods,such as hiring foreign nationals with the promise of citizenship after perhaps a 10-15 year contract or duty tour with the armed forces from Commonwealth countries,such as Pakistan,India and Nepal.this would definitely expand our manpower base,help to solve our population problems to an extent by granting these contracted soldiers citizenship(if the government is willing to allow the South Asian population to grow,which they should),and they would be relatively loyal,as British history can attest to,where they used sepoys and gurkhas as well as pathan soldiery in maintaining the peace in their colonies such as Singapore.

furthermore,their loyalty would be less questionable as the interests of their countries of origin and their cultures would not be threatened,and Singapore would provide a relatively decent place for them to base their families.eventually,after their service,they could retain their citizenship or residency while returning to their countries of origin and promoting enlistment in our forces as a possible career path,as ex-Gurkhas do in Nepal.

Overdraft liaoz...next few years of GDP still must pay for the 6 stealth frigates and 20 helis and the...2billion NGF programme and DSTA scientists don't come free.. In a WAR, nepalese soldiers have more likelihood of running away cause this isn't thier country lol..

Just think what if the POTENTIAL aggresor paid these gurkhas money to turn against us? Don't forget they are mercenaries and if you got money anything goes..

12 Stealth Frigates and 4 heavily upgraded kockhums subs and some 2 AWACs and P3-Orions with anti sub capabilities should be able to knock off china's sovereignmy's class of ships , unless they fire a nuclear missile at our fleet lol,, we need Visby class of stealth ships..and with the KC-135 we should be able to use the NGF which is deployed with Air-land missiles harpoon anti ship missiles or some sorta of exocet on the incoming destroyers from southern china...

i think that we should get 12 frigates and heavily modify the current gunboat we got..the armor is too light..should upgrade to composite plastics like those used in F-117 and equip them with SSBN lol.. den its like Gulf war Twisted Evil

Dont be naive as to think that china would launch an invasion erasing the thread from the presence of USA and NATO in mind. The combine attack by Nato forces on Mainland China can crippled HER. Maybe you can count how many aircraft carrier / Aircrafts are there in the NATO. Afterall, they are the armed guardian of the earth.

The Gurkhas are hired for homeland security management not a frontline Combat unit. I m sure the Govt know best what are the lessons learn during WW2.

Your inclusion of Gurkhas is not relevant to RSN EXpansion Ideas..

In my opinions, RSN should get newer submarines, larger firgates , with long ranged SAMs, and wide arrays of torpedos, Exocets and Harpoons..

It can considered converting civilian super tankers into light aircraft carrier ( similar to HMS Invincible or Kiev or Minsk carriers ( from ex-USSR) )

This tanker turned carriers can carry Harriers, Super Cobras ..

dun really need larger ships IMO.

improve amphibious capability by having a ship that can support more helos? but thats not critical, only if RSN got too much money leftover...

If u notice, RSN always go for small but capable ships and buy them a few at a time, like the LST, frigates etc...
It doesnt go for just buy one or two big capital ships like a large amphibious ship with 10,000 tonnes displacement or like 2 destroyers that are big and capable.... it always likes having more small but very capable ships...

with the current confirmed force,
the frigates are large enuff for trips into the South China Sea, corvettes can handle the relatively sheltered waters to the west of singapore, mostly straits of malacca only.., anything large go there will be playing bumper boats with the merchant marine

okay, to end of, i know nuts abt anything, anything i type is a result of thinking thorugh stuff on the net, etc, in otherwords,i'm another armchair nut, so dun read too deep into what i say, thanx

What we need more is an increase in the size of the maritime air patrol.The MPAs should preferably be fitted with Popeye or SLAM-ER missiles.I'm not sure whether a StormShadow is compatible with the MPA we are currently operating.Using the current LST platform, we could build light assault ships for helicopters, and rapid deployment forces.Anyway, maritime surveillance is crucial in a hypothetical conflict with a bluewater navy in the South China Sea.But one limitation we face is the aerial firepower we can call upon in the sea itself.Without air support, our frigates and LSTs are practically only able to perfom defensive duties, not conduct offensive operations without feeling safe at the back.The RN is currently holding tests to see whether the AH-64Ds are able to be modified for a naval attack role.Now that would be interesting to say the least.

LOL ah-64 is primarily built for land based ops...

anyway even if u use the AH-64 against ships will be very vulnearable from F/A-18s and the ship's AAM and not to say low range AA guns

read somewhere that AH-64 do not have AA capability..and the A-10 Warthog oso..

put a Ah-64 and u will lose out due to lack of AIM-9X

And do what, may I ask? Our fleet is small enough as it is, buying such a vessel requires the fleet to divert our limited resources for its operation and protection. It's a waste of taxpayer's money and it's not feasible for our navy for the time being. Do you know how much fuel these things consume? Oil is not running cheaper these days.

Throwing money away to buy "prestige" is hardly a good thing to do, a good example is the laughable purchases our neighbour made.

You may mean abt Thailand's VSTOL carrier that is only operated once a month.

However, todays carriers are nuclear powered like the Nimitz class carrier, they can go unrefuelled for 2 decades

With MY Astros,our airfields are vulnerable,and no matter how hardened or reinforced,if you bomb our runways long enough,they are still going to take time to repair.Same goes for our secret runways posing as roads,though nobody knows the majority of them.

We should have a 2nd strike capability for the RSAF,like some form of submerged platform out at sea or something,a small aircraft carrier of sorts that can perhaps hold a squadron,that just stays out at the Southern Islands,to provide 2nd strike capability.

we could also think of converting a freighter or oil tanker to a helicarrier,perhaps modify our Apaches to allow naval operations?The Brits are doing that around now.

More over , USA has thousands of strike aircrafts..if 1 carrier sink , most likely 81 aircraft will go down with it , along with 92,000 tons of diplomacy , and each aircraft is worth almost US 50 million , and 5,000 crews and you will run a risk of a nuclear spill .

Last time i was like u keep on thinking about aircraft carrier , and the glory of being inside 1...ETC ETC..

My best bet would be to improve the armor of warship , lest something like courageous happens again...and to improve the speed , carry more exocets and harpoons , improve missile tracking and stealth capabilities and we can have the most powerful fleet in SEA for 10 years to come

Anyway im beginning to doubt ST Marine's quality of ships...after that incident...whether how thick is the steel inside the ship etc etc...

IMO we should just get more frigates and even more MCVs..or maybe a stealth version of the MCV, smth like the swedish visby… introducing a larger class of warships into the RSN for now seems counterproductive…
