Considering the development of the massive Punggol uptown, there may be a need for improved links across the north (i.e. NE-NW) in the future. Hougang Central gets link to Yishun via 102 (not counting 854, which is less convenient), while Sengkang - Yishun is preserved with 102 and Punggol - Yishun is still covered by 117 (though Punggol East residents will have to make a transfer via 85 --> 117, 85 --> 102 or 3 --> 39 / 858 / 969).

Here are my thoughts:

102 replacing 85 is a v good idea - will work just fine, but 85 going to BPJ? I am not sure there is any demand between BPJ and Sengkang/Punggol towns considering they are too far away, and both are residential areas.

324 going to HG Ave 5/7 is a good idea, but residents will complain on increased travel time.

85 can extend to Sengkang West road instead of turning on Jalan Kayu and instead terminate at AMK via YCK Road, CTE, AMK Ave 5, AMK Ave 10, AMK Ave 3. This will provide some relief to the overly crowded sv 50 (Sengkang-AMK) and sv 88 (AMK Ave 10 - AMK MRT).

If you observe 178 at Corporation Road, all the bus stops are empty. There is hardly anyone boarding at these stops. They prefer to walk to Corporation Dr instead from where they can get 30/240/246 to Boon Lay and many services to Lakeside MRT.

178 frequency is 14-16 mins and you can imagine it comes on a long winding route from Woodlands. There are times when a bus will get stuck somewhere along the way and you may have to wait for 25-30 mins for a bus. Clearly, people don't find it worth it to board. At Boon Lay, you would expect bus to arrive in time, yet bus will not fetch more than 20-25 pax at most buses during prime peak.

Likewise 178 from JE to Corporation also has less than 30 pax even during peak hours. Between JE and BBT is already covered by 66. The unique part of the route is connecting BBT to Upper Bukit Timah/BPJ MRT.

Here are my thoughts:

324 going to HG Ave 5/7 is a good idea, but residents will complain on increased travel time.

Punggol is slated to be much more than just a residential town, based on the plans by URA. When there's enough people, there'll be communities and developments. Parks, offices, as well as SIT will be there in the future.

So, I guess it's not impossible that there will be demand, in time to come. Also consider that there are currently no services from Bt Panjang that run express east along SLE (171 has its own catchment along Yishun and Mandai), let alone provide links to YCK / Sengkang. Long-hauls such as 161 and 969 were probably not much popular when they were just first introduced as well (refute me where accuracy demands, but I'm pretty sure some expressway services shared such properties).

If given the choice, residents will be more inclined to choose less winding alternatives. In particular for those who travel to and from Sengkang West. Do you know many people who'd rather take the MRT from Yishun to Tampines than service 39/969? Of course, you could say there's not enough demand right now to warrant such a service, and a long one it is. I'm just musing about possible potential that such a service may have, some tine between Punggol's maturation and the opening of the Cross Island MRT Line, in the near future. Options generate demand too. Don't get too tense. Cheers.
