"By Adeline Koh: Its no secret who's better
I hate to be blunt, but JC students are better than polytechnic
students, period.
Politically incorrect I may sound, but here are the facts. Entry
requirements at JCs are far more stringent than those at polys. As
a result, large numbers of students who do not make the cut for JCs
are "forced" to opt for a poly education.
Those who enter polys of their own choice remain the exception,
rather than the rule. Also, when the Public Service Commission
awards scholarships to Singapore's best and brightest, they look to
JCs, not polytechnics.
Yes, polys have improved in recent years, but there is still a
long way to go before the average poly student matches up to the
average JC student.
Sad to say, but this is an open secret."
Just want to quote an incident that happened some time, 1 mth
back at work.I'm currently working in an american MNC that does SI
work around the world. So happened that there was this fellow
colleague (who took the A Level, Uni route in Computing in NUS) who
joined my worksite from another place. He was mentored by a senior
programmer ( a poly graduate but working 2 yrs already) on the
architecture and framework stuff.3 weeks on the poor senior
programmer was still helping him execute a piece of java code that
the giy didn't noe how to run ...
Yes she does not claim to saying poly ppl are dumber and the works.
However I feel that her words are certainly pretty dumb for a uni
grad.
Maybe its time for her to start working than see whos winning in
the coporate circles. You can have the brains, but without EQ or
being street wise, you still be eaten.
PS: I have personally worked with 1st class honours grads from
local uni who are just working as ordinary programmers who think
that their results will rescue them to something bigger...
