Reasons for bad service standard in sg

yeah, if not then its one of those aunties,
there's one guy who patronised us recently when he found that shopping here would give him a rebate on his bill
from what i know he should have received it in his mail , and his wife seems to be aware of it and got embarassed and went off

when he insisted that we must call up the bank to comfirm for him, even after we tried to tell him its a rebate in his bill and not a discount
he kept saying this is bad service and we should call up the bank immediately to comfirm

hello? does he know the difference between rebate and discount ? needless to say , being in our position we had to call up the bank , and well what do you know? its a rebate
and thoughout the whole thing we tried to smile and kept our temper ,the moth*r fuck*r 's attitude was
"i'm spending here, and the customer is king"

tips ? as a singaporean, i don't normally tip here
but whenever i go overseas i try to tip as often as possible if the service is acceptable, don't have to be too good,in singapore after seeing the service charge i just don't feel likg tipping liao

May be your standard of service to you is good, but to the customers it is still not up to standard Smile . You should instead of complaining , try harder.

singaporeans got 2 type.
first type is dunno but like to act smart
second type is dunno, like to ask

when the first type becomes a customer, like for example in cafe cartel, they dunno how to use the self-order pad and don't wanna ask. any how write , ask the waiter to take their order and when we teach them nicely they sae wad wad kind of service is this, order we take ourself blah blah blah. (fark sia they cannot get off the stage use bad service as excuse)

when the second type is very cute one. they will ask u very nicely for things. "can i have a set of fork and spoon" " can u give me 2 wadever" but they do it so often that it make us the runners really run. but still ok lar i mean since u ask me nicely i bring to u lor. 2 way traffic.

the rare-est type is the friendy and smart type. they know wad to do and wad not to. i have encounter them b4 they are very nice ppl around 25-35. they like to joke with the runners chat with us.

one of the guests said that, as a service staff, u shldn't be expecting the customers to be nice to u, then u give them good service... u shld always provide good service regardless of how the customers behave...

Correct. That is their Jobs and *gasp* you are supposed tp dp your job. --> Service staff, I know this might a a revelation to some, but please do not be too shocked. Deep breaths, etc.

i thought when u apply for a service job, the basic prerequisite is always "committed to providing good custmer service"
how did all these people even get through the interviews?
Is there something with the employers' standard? Even if they wayang through the interview, the boss should monitor each employees' performance. this is wat every boss should do.

The answer is recruitment practices in Singapore is very primitive.

The service industry demands long hours and offers poor pay. Locals are therefore not prepared to stay long, denying this sector the experienced hands they need.

Most of us also don't see service as a long term career goal as there is very little incentive or attractive benefits.

I worked as a waiter once back in 1997 and had my fair share of run-ins with rude and uncouth locals along with the standard tourist crowds. One thing i noted that all 99% of my colleagues were malaysians and didn't speak good english, a major hindrance in the line of work. And few (if any) locals wanted the job.

The truth is, many of us (including prominent ministers) demand better standards in our service sector but have no idea how to go about achieving it.

oh god i can't agree more with u. yes our pay sux. we get paid so little per month and yet we do so much work. we even need to work on week ends and ph. for all the sacrifices we made we only ask to be appreciated is that too much ? Neutral if sth is not done to the service industry i am very sure the standards are gonna drop faster.
