Why this... and why that
HEADLIGHT HAZARD: There has been a dramatic increase in the use of
Xenon (blue-white) headlights on vehicles. I am sure all drivers
have encountered these blinding headlights.
Many times, I have been blinded by a vehicle turning out from a
lane. I also get blinded when the light hits my side-view mirrors.
Singapore is well lit in most areas, so there is no need for these
lights.

MORE EXPO PARKING LOTS NEEDED: Besides adding more space to the
Singapore Expo, I hope more parking spaces will also be
added.
The ERP parking system should also be used instead of payment
machines, which result in long queues when trade shows end.

HOT-ZONE ENTIRE CITY: The plan by Philadelphia officials to turn
the city into the world's largest wireless hot spot should give
Singapore something to look at ('Philadelphia to become huge
wireless Internet hot spot'; ST, Sept 3). Singapore can well afford
the cost of US$10 million (S$17 million) cited. Even if it is US$50
million, we should do it.
The rate Singapore telcos charge (21 cents per minute) for hot
spots is way too high. Singapore should consider hot-zoning the
entire city as part of infrastructure-building, much like the roads
and train tracks. This will help Singapore become an information
hub.

LIGHTER CATCHES FIRE: A few months ago, I bought a pack of
lighters. On Tuesday morning, I was at the kitchen sink when I
heard a loud 'swoosh' sound and found my kitchen cabinet burning on
the inside.
One of the lighters stored there had popped its metallic top and
exploded. I was lucky because I managed to put out the fire before
the other lighters caught fire too. Does any government agency
check these lighters before they are put on sale? Is there a
quality mark we should look out for?

CATER TO NEEDY ELDERLY: I was touched by the efforts of Ms Fion
Phua and other volunteers ('Free household items: Anyone? Anyone?'
(ST, Sept 20).
The elderly who live on social welfare could well need the items
but may be unaware of the giveaway because many are illiterate.
Perhaps charitable organisations can help reach out to them.

WHY IS IC NOT ACCEPTED?: My friend, who was asked to report to the
police station, was asked to get a visitor pass. He handed over his
identity card in exchange for the pass but was told that only a
credit card or driving licence would do. His ATM card was also
rejected.
Why is this so? Not everyone has a credit card or driving
licence.
