4. Yes. However, you are assuming that the school lacks candidates who meet the reqs as set out in the prospectus etc. I doubt that is the case.

6. Look, this is clearly an absurd suggestion. There are only so many resources available. How can you expect the school to start another class, at the expense of other students.

7. That is illogical and insensible. Imo.

8. I do not think the rules are silly. I think they serve a very practical function. To change entry requirements on a whim would be unfair to all those who meet the requirements. They put in the time. They put in the effort. They worked towards a target. They made it.

And the person concerned is not deprived for the rest of his/her life. He can accept a place on another course. If that is not possible because his results can't get him into poly, and he really really wants to go into poly, i would suggest he try again next year. Just retake the subject. Its not the end of the world.

On a more general note, i think that there can be too much focus on grades. They ought to consider more than just grades eg. For entry into a Mech Eng course, maybe the school could give priority to students who have shown a genuine interest in the course by taking part in some work experience program or some robotics competition. Then, i do not think the student should be turned away if he falls just short of the entry guidelines. The policy must, however be made official.

PS: Note that redstone was given an appeal. He appealed but the appeal was unsuccessful. We do not know how his appeal was considered. Wouldn;t it be presumptuous of us to say that the system is too rigid?

Sadly, still we have ppl who cannot see the point. They go by the rules nothing else but the rules... It shows how "successful" our gov has nurture his civil servants. Be obedient and comply with the rules.... haiz... They can't seem to think out of the box. Laughing

If we are sticking to this standard of selection, we will be missing several Bill gates an Michael Dell.

I have given up hopes on Singapore education. I believe many had too. These include LHL, GCT and many more who sent their children oversea for education.

Degrees and diplomas and wat not paper qualifications cannot be the only benchmarks in judging a person. Because the academic side is after all just the academic side.

In terms of his character and his personality, then you not only need to have many meetings with him or her, you also need people who have the ability to see through each person's character by just talking to him or observing his body language for eg.

As for talent, if he truly has it, then not only he has the ability to speak well of it but that he can also truly demonstrate it. Actions must justify the words.

that's why lots of talented local people go overseas where they are appreciated than to walk into wall here while the doors are kept open for "foreign talents", academic scholars and white horses

I will always encourage people who have a dream, to go out of singapore to fulfil it. Don't get worn out and have your fighting spirit broken by the yoke you will have to wear here. Even the people have been wearing blinders and do not know it, and in fact impose the same blinders on others in the name of rules upon others.

Come to think of it, everyone will make a serious mistake. That mistake is growing old! Once you hit 35, you better pray real hard that you will not be retrenched because of your high pay and that your company think your are not modern thinking enough.

This narrow-minded thinking seems here to stay.

That is why I am choosing migration. I want to migrate to another country where I will not be discriminated because i am 35 years old or older.

yeah man... I am actually getting that uneasy feeling...
The funny thing is that other countries want more experienced workers cause their young people are irresponsible and do not have that level of over-view and knowledge. In some companies, the older workers are pair with the younger to let them learn from each other. And the companies have job rotation to develop and groom the people further. Only sg where they see older people as liability to be kick out with no growth opportunities nor is there any development to these people. The govt training is a joke and farce. And only in sg where they worship the young people with no experience to come out with ridiculous suggestions and do not take into consideration the current setup and the impact of the suggestions. Then when it bombs out, the govt would cover it up...
The biased, narrow thinking will not change... not in our lifetime.. I know I would be look upon as 2nd class in other country but to me, when I retire, I want to get out of his sh!tty place. My bf never understood why I am so biased against sg till I brought him out to US.

Wrong, if you're at the top you can make all the "honest mistakes" you want, to the tune of hundreds of millions. If you're at the bottom then you'll end up in prison. Smile

Imagine getting good results for most of the subjects required for poly entrance. But 1 subject missed by 1 grade.

NOTHING you can do. They only see your results and nothing else!!!

Appeal, rejected. Academic excellence certs and prizes no use too....

And the govt is promoting the 'recognition of young talent'. You can get into some secondary schools by talent, into uni by talent more than results....

But post sec entirely different story?!

This appears to be the case for almost all education institution throughout the world. If you are a terrific student but yet fail to make the grade to enter a prestigious school such as Harvard or Cambridge, you can really only blame yourself for failing to make the grade. Almost all courses, unless the really poor reputated, need some basic standard and criteria for entries. If any Tom Dick and Harry can enter into the school regardless of their result, then very soon we can see the standard of the school dropping.
