Lol. dont be silly. You do not have exclusive knowledge for that. And yes, that is being practical. And no, there is every possibilty of Japan buying a multi-role F15 plane. Just like Korea. Well, it is the same case with the rest as well.

I know why we bought the F15s. I had just said something to that effect up there. Same with some of the other forumners.

Do you know Japan miltary concript or not? they have limited offensive capability. If they brought F-15E, it will spark a row between China/Korea.

What i am saying that what ever a/c in storage in USA, in Davis Monathan AB, have still need FMS approval from US Congress, be it leased, refurbish to other countries.

What is the F-2 then? It is a strike aircraft. I seriously doubt the Japanese are going to care about what the rest of them think given the new strategic picture.

Actually, you have not exactly proven anything. The F15s remain a viable option for many countries; including Japan. The F15s remain in the service of many nations. So parts are plentiful. We may not even be the last operator. Especially, if these other nations choose to maintain thier planes for much longer or when there are future purchases. Meanwhile, countries are not buying second hand F16s in droves. To the contrary, they are buying brand new F16s. In short, i do not know what you are talking about. Mr. Green

You are simply speculating; notwithstanding your claims for research et al. But I guess we can agree on one thing. We had sound reasons for buying the F15s. That is because we have an obvious need.; obviously. But then again, the other posters have already mentioned that long before you decided to pitch in. Very Happy

F-2 is an oversized, overprice Blk 40 F-16 with main purpose of Anti-shipping role with limited bombing capabilities.....aka dumb bombs...though they have AESA radars.

F-15 in service in MANY NATIONS? Laughing lets see....we got USA, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Japan, South Korea and soon us Singapore....you call that MANY? Is a pinch compared to the sales of MiG-21, MiG-29s or even F-16s.

Why are`nt those nations a lot where aircrafts of the F-15 category is concerned? And why are you comparing the F-15s to the F-16s. mig-21, etc ? They are in a different category.

You miss my point: i said LAST OPERATOR, not last BUYER. Japanese opted for F-15Es? you got to be joking....they is a high tendecy of them getting the EUROFIGHTER TYPHOONS if they can't get the RAPTORS, plus is totally different roles. High not likely Iraqis will get any Uncle Sam a/c. C'mon , be practical now, do you think is possible?

The fact is, other countries wld rather go for 2nd hand F-16 rather than F-15.

Japan may buy Eurofighter, defence minister says

TOKYO, Oct 17 (Reuters) - Japan is considering buying Eurofighter Typhoons to replace part of its ageing air force fleet, Defence Minister Shigeru Ishiba said in an interview on Wednesday.

Tokyo had shown interest in buying the Lockheed-Martin (LMT.N: Quote, Profile , Research) F-22 Raptor, which boasts stealth capabilities far superior to those of any other aircraft available, but the U.S. government is reluctant to allow the technology to be exported, even to a close ally such as Japan.

"The F-22 is an exceptional aircraft," Ishiba said. "But we at the Defence Ministry have not decided that it is absolutely necessary for Japan."

Ishiba said the strongest alternative among planes manufactured by other countries was the Eurofighter.

"The French Rafale is difficult to use. We certainly wouldn't choose a Russian fighter plane. So I think it would be the Eurofighter Typhoon," he said.

The Eurofighter is built by a consortium including BAE Systems (BAES.L: Quote, Profile , Research), Airbus parent firm EADS (EAD.PA: Quote, Profile , Research) and Alenia Aeronautica, a unit of Italy's Finmeccanica (SIFI.MI: Quote, Profile , Research).

Ishiba denied that U.S. reluctance to export the F-22 to Japan was linked to a leak of classified information relating to the joint U.S.-Japanese ballistic missile defence system. But he said Tokyo nevertheless needed to improve its handling of classified data.

A scandal erupted this year when Japanese naval officers were reported to have leaked classified information about the Aegis radar system used on U.S. and Japanese missile-defence capable ships.

"It is a fact that Aegis information was leaked. So I feel strongly that Japan's information management system is not good enough," Ishiba said, adding that tougher penalties and more reliable ways of detecting leaks were needed.

Japan narrows next-generation fighter requirement choice

Japanese Ministry of Defence (MoD) officials have decided to continue formal interest in three aircraft to meet its F-X next-generation fighter requirements - the Eurofighter Typhoon, and Boeing's F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and F-15E Strike Eagle - although a plan to lobby Washington to acquire Lockheed Martin's F-22 has not been ruled out.

A source at the Japanese MoD said: "Officials from the Ministry of Defence went to the US and Europe from 25 February to 15 March and have decided on three aircraft that could meet Japan's next-generation fighter aircraft."

He added that, contrary to media reports, Dassault's Rafale "is not being considered".

Speaking on 20 March, the Japanese MoD source refused to say whether interest in the F-22 had been discontinued. "We have decided on three aircraft to meet Japan's next-generation fighter requirements. But the F-22 is a modern, hi-tech fighter - so yes, of course, we are very interested. But of lot of things would need to be cleared before we would have a chance of acquiring the F-22."

There is a lot of talk about F-22 and F-35 but if Japan wants to maintain its timeline for the FX it will make a decision without those aircraft. The JSF will not be ready in time and it's our belief that, just like Australia, the F-22 will not be allowed for Japan. At some point maybe yes, but not now."

Boeing is also offering a mix of Super Hornets and Eagles to Japan. The Japan Air Self-Defense Force has a requirement to replace its upgraded F-4EJ Kai Phantoms, however Japan is pushing strongly to acquire the F-22 Raptor--an aircraft that is far from being a Phantom replacement. Apart from the extraordinary cost, the greatest obstacle to Japan's F-22 plans is a formal U.S. prohibition on exports.
"We just don't see the Congressional ban being lifted," Kronenbert told Show News.[/b] "A few months ago (U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense) Gordon England told Australia that the F-22 would not be released for international sale. Also the Defense Security Co-operation Agency has said that it would take $1 billion in non-recurring costs just to redesign the aircraft for a co-production release in Japan. That's really problematic and it would take three or four years just to figure out how to do that.
"An F-22 refusal has to be figured into their thinking, even thought it's not directed against Japan specifically. But the bar is not going be lifted and F-22 production comes to an end in 2009 or 2010 so that in itself was always going to be a problem for their program."

Lol. Now you`re into speculating too Very Happy I mentioned a couple of countries up there. Also, i did say it depends on the time-frame of usage. Some countries may decide to retire them earlier or later(especially if they opt to upgrade them). Cheers
