I think our F-16s shouldbe enough for multi-role missions. What we should get is a dedicated fighter to counter the SU.

BTW, Typhoon will ship with the Meteor BVRAAM, which has a range of 80nm more than the AIM-120.

agree with observe,
the Python4 is a SR AAM, while the R-77 is a MR/LR AAM.
While it is not official that we have the python, it is official that Malaysia has the R-73- one of the best WVR/Dogfighting AAMs- not to mention that its coupled with HMS which they officially have.

Foxtrout8, the source is the official website of Typhoon, I won’t read too much into it. I am not saying Typhoon is not a good ATG platform, its just that it is not maximised for that capability as well as other fighters, namely F-16 and Rafale. The Typhoon “block” model as of now does not have a very good ATG suite and capability. Like I said, the block upgrade for the ATG will come later in the development cycle. When that will happen is anybody’s guess. Until then I won’t put Typhoon as “leading” in the ATG role.

RMAF is widely reported to have R-77s, sources range from Russia, China and Malaysia. Problem is that no photographic proof has been presented. No one has seen the missile on a RMAF jet.

The same goes to RSAF's Pythons. No photographic evidence, although it is widely accepted that RSAF is a user of the Python missile system. How you are going to interpret that I do not know. I seriously doubt the 600 Pythons comment as well.

I dun think it is secret. There are numerous info on the net stating that malaysia did do an upgrade to intergrated the R-77 onto their Fulcrum N.

but the acquisition of the R-77 missile might be secret.

Well they did agree to a upgrade of their Skyhawks to fire Mavericks and never got the missile for the planes.

*Telling the world they wanted large numbers of Tornadoes and Hawks, then finally settling on 28 Hawks alone

* Ditto MiG-29 and Hornets, then settling on 18 and 8

* Revealed submarine plans in the early-to-mid 80s, then only after Singapore has acquired significant ASW assets and submarine capability(in terms of crew training), they finally announce their sub purchase last year.

* Talked about local industry updating their F-5s, only to see the deal bog down in allegations of dubous biz practices, and currently the F-5s are rotting away

Me? Dislike Malaysia? Sorry, but I respectfully disagree. I have Malaysian friends and last I checked I had no problems with them at all. My problem is with those windbags on both sides of the Causeway who manipulate the feelings of both Singaporeans and Malaysians for cheap political points and those same windbags who shoot their mouth off and end up shooting themselves in the foot.

A check of the posts I made here and in the Speakers Corner would vindicate that fact.

Why are you associating the Hawks with the Tornado IDS?
The Tornado IDS was cancelled and replaced with the F/A-18/MiG-29 project.

What is wrong with 18 MiG-29s and 8 F/A-18Ds?
Actually, they were going to buy more ( 10-16 ) Hornets but the 1997 crisis hit. That project was put on hold and is now being replaced by the F/A-18E/F / Su-30 project.

The F-5 problem is a business problem between te companies. Why do you associate it with the Malaysian Government?

Before they acquired submarines last year, they have been sending RMN people to go train overseas in submarines for the past 10 years. That is called training, then only buying.

THE RSN did the same thing but the only difference is they bought the training subs.

Not that i dislike malaysian but very much the fact that we had noticed is that , the malaysian government are most of the time too quick on their words that it leads to many NATO cases. Technically , viper isnt wrong by saying that. Let drop the case and not drag another malaysian issue in.
